Many fans are still in doubt about how the order of the series works in the universe of The Vampire Diaries, considering that we have two direct spin-offs of the series. To make it easier to understand, check out an explanation of TVDu's chronological order below.
Based on the book series of the same name, The Vampire Diaries was a suspense and fantasy TV series released in 2009 on the CW subscription channel, which followed a group of supernatural beings, residents of the fictional city of Mystic Falls, in Virginia.
An absolute hit among the teenage audience, it had the names of Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek) and Julie Plec (Scream) as writers and was on air for eight seasons, until 2017, when it ended its plot.
The chronological order of The Vampire Diaries franchise
Concurrent with the story of The Vampire Diaries, in the fourth season of the show, a spin-off was launched that followed in parallel one of the families featured in the series, the Mikaelsons.
Called The Originals, the plot ran simultaneously with the original show from the end of 2013 to the beginning of 2016, when The Vampire Diaries advanced three years in its history. Subsequently, it was The Originals' turn to skip five (2017) and then seven years (2018) in the franchise's timeline, saying goodbye to the public in its fifth season.
But the story didn't stop there! Still in 2018, another production from the TVD universe debuted on the CW. Called Legacies, the series, chronologically, took place two years after The Originals, starting in the year 2028, and had as its backdrop the Salvatore School for Special Youth, where Hope Mikaelson and the twins Lizzie and Josie Saltzman, characters born on TVD.
Ended after four seasons, it was on air until June 2022.

Legacies – two years after the end of The Originals
The Vampire Diaries tells the story of Elena Gilbert, a young human woman who, shortly after losing her parents in a car accident, falls in love with the new “boy” who has just arrived at her high school – a vampire named Stefan Salvatore, who, in reality, , is hundreds of years old.
As if that weren't enough, the situation becomes even more complicated when Damon, Stefan's evil vampire brother, also decides to show up and Elena finds herself torn between the two boys' love.
Parallel to the main love triangle, the series also shows how life in Mystic Falls is completely changed by the arrival of supernatural creatures, which mess up the lives of everyone around Elena and bring with them ghosts from the past.
